Flame spray is one of the earliest forms of Thermal Coating. The equipment is now more sophisticated but runs very similar to the earlier models.

Oxygen and acetylene are used for the combustion gases. Powder alloys are fed into the combustion chamber and propelled to a substrate surface. This system generates a lot more heat directly onto the substrate surface.

At IST we use this system primarily for delivering Titanium alloys which are used as a corrosion barrier against the effects of CL02 on stainless steel. Other applications include a spray and fuse process used for manufacturing pump sleeves for the Pulp & Paper Industry as well as the Oil & Gas industry.

Since the introduction of Twin Wire Arc Spray systems the Flame Spray systems are not used as much anymore. Arc Spray delivers at a much cooler temperature and has a wider range of alloys available.
